First of all JP sets up an unfortunate dichotomy between palliative care nurses and those working in acute hospital settings - and with it a failure to understand the significance of context (political as well as clinical).
For example, she seems oblivious to a recent report
from the Royal College of Physicians which found "access to palliative care services is inadequate and inequitable, with unacceptable variations in care geographically, across different demographic groups and patients with different illnesses and needs. There is particular disparity between patients with cancer and those suffering from non-malignant conditions. The best care is excellent, the worst may be non-existent".

So is JP content for some dying patients to receive excellent palliative care while others presumably don't?
She is also wrong to say that hospices are funded by charity, which in her mind creates a quality imperative - the split is more like 70-30 (almost a third of the cost of hospice care comes from the public purse just like the rest of the NHS).
I'm sure somebody with more time and energy will Fisk JP's article point by point but as already noted the level of ignorance is actually breath taking.
Its funny but scary at the same time.
Usually these kinds of articles make me angry.

I have been at loggerheads with that dickhead lightf00t for most of the weekend in another telegraph claptrap article. He hops from article to article spewing his filth. He's not a student nurse, he's an idiot.
LightF00t is classic. I hope no one gets offended by my bursery comment. If I was training right now in the UK I would have to do a bursery. I am just lucky that in the time and place that I trained it was an easier world.
I am all over those comments right now to be honest and no I didn't get offended by your comments as I indicated. My bursary is more of a hindrance than a help.

I don't give two tits if Judith Potts is a cancer survivor. She doesn't know a damn thing about Nursing in the NHS.
I wonder what made her think that hospice nurses are trained differently than NHS ward nurses?
She probably went to google or the UCAS website and found a Bsc in Palliative Care (the top-up) and thought that must be it.
She certainly hasn't done the proper research, to say the least.
But what do you expect from a "journalist" in a background in acting.
Lost the will to comment after reading her previous articles
1) The Telegraph caters to the twinset and pearls brigade, so they are always "shocked" and "appalled"
2) Actress as a journalist?...lol...I googled her and couldn't find any listing of where/when she acted in anything
3) In a few years such people will get what they think they want, as the NHS disintegrates....by that stage they will be chronic medical patients and will no longer qualify for treatment....be careful what you wish for
As a fairly frequent patient in NHS hospitals I have to say that the care I and a few others I know have received has always been of high standard. The best care IS excellent, but the NHS does need more nurses on the wards as they are spread far too thinly. These people are frequently run off their feet, but such is their dedication they won't let their patients down. Yes, there are a few who are a little work shy, but thankfully their numbers are small. In my Mothers days as a Nurse she was once refused permission to go'off'duty as the Ward Sister remarked that she had not completed her work adequately, Two hours later, my darling little Mum learned that one of the castors on a bed was crooked, "thus Nurse, you would have left a sloppy ward!"!
With reference to the report from the Royal College of Physicians about disparity of care between patients with cancer and those with non-malignant conditions, and I don't really know if this information is significant here, but two days ago I actually found a website that appears to offer help for mind and body discomforts-including something for after cancer treatments and depression, whether this site would be useful to folk with 'non-malignant' conditions I've no idea but I thought I'd mention it.
